Grand Casemates Square via Landport (and later Watergate) has always been the principle entrance to the city. The Casemates building was prepared by William Green, chief engineer in 1770 to add bombproof barrack accommodation for the soldiers, but construction was not undertaken until after the Great Siege, hence the date 1817. The square was particularly famous for the executions and punishments carried out in front of watching crowds, but thanks to the Government's vision Casemates Square has been returned to its former glory, and is now once again the centre of life in Gibraltar, though with less dramatic entertainment!
Our establishment was named "Lord Nelson" to commemorate England's most famous Admiral - one of the best-known military figures associated with the Rock. Gibraltar has strong connections with Nelson and the Battle of Trafalgar - Nelson's body was brought here after the battle (but there is some debate as to whether he actually came ashore before returning to England for the last time).
Our concept was for a Bar Brasserie, from the dictionary: beer salon, restaurant serving beer with food. Our cuisine offers innovative delights, from locally caught fresh fish to prime steak. Our extensive menu is supplemented by daily specials, governed by what is available from the boats and markets, this is not fast food - all our meals are freshly prepared and may take longer to arrive on your table than in some other establishments. The constantly updated wine list features the very best from Europe and the New World winemaking areas. We serve a vast selection of beers to suit any taste, 6 beers on tap served in traditional English pints and halves with a plethora of imported bottled beer, all from local distributors Anglo Hispano.
If you are visiting Gibraltar then we hope the old world atmosphere makes your visit to the Lord Nelson a memorable part of the Gibraltar experience; if you are one of our regular locals then we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your business.
